Buy Fresher is a line of local products distributed and marketing by Piazza Produce to restaurants and food service organizations, who want to use the freshest fruit, vegetables, dairy products and meat available.
 
At Piazza Produce we define “local” as those businesses within our delivery area.  We can “backhaul” from areas where we deliver.  This includes most of Indiana and large portions of Illinois, Kentucky, and Ohio.

They get a closer relationship to the seasonal bounty of the local land.  Fresh, seasonal food tastes better because it has more time to ripen naturally – on the vine, rather than in a warehouse.  The flavor is also enhanced because the produce hasn’t spent much time in transit or in storage.

Using food from local suppliers also reduces the chance of contamination since less processing is involved.

Our Buy Fresher products contribute to this green initiative.  These quality products spend less time in transit – reducing the fuel use and pollution associated with transporting products from afar.
In addition to seeking out great products close to home, Piazza Produce is addressing specific business operations, including:

Waste Management
  
By removing and recycling corrugated cardboard packaging, we have reduced our waste from 1500 tons to 740 tons per year – a reduction of more than 50%.
  
Tomato Disposal

We reduced our annual landfill contribution by 684 tons by processing unusable tomatoes in a large stainless steel garbage disposal before disposing the waste at a water treatment facility.

Efficient Power Consumption

We have installed a power factor correction capacitor on the main power supply of Piazza Produce.  This capacitor monitors the quality of electrical power and reduces distortions, helping us to operate more efficiently.

Recycling of Old Office Equipment

We have contracted with a local vendor who breaks down the components of our outdated equipment for further downstream recycling.  These items are kept out of the local landfill and also do not end up in other countries whose recycling efforts may contribute to global pollution and/or contamination.

Other Initiatives

We continue to explore ways that we can help the environment.  We are currently examining programs to focus on plastic wrap and packaging, copier/computer paper, and batteries, just to name a few.
